Now Hiring: Freelance Graphic Designer

Position Summary: 

Logic(s) is seeking a talented and motivated Freelance Graphic Designer to collaborate with our creative team on the magazine’s visual identity. The Graphic Designer will develop visual concepts, create visual assets, and appealing designs that clearly communicate the magazine’s content and theme(s). This position will work with editorial leadership to develop brand guidelines and an engaging visual identity in print and web publications. The  Freelance Graphic Designer position requires a highly creative and imaginative individual, Logic(s) is interested in the individual having their own established creative practice in any visual medium as well as experience in developing layouts that are responsive to the context specific politics of race, gender, sexuality, and disability transnationally. 

Logic(s) publishes biannual print and digital magazines in various mediums and creative styles, including reported articles, features, graphic stories, poetry, speculative and science fiction, and visual essays. The mission of Logic(s) is to draw in voices and perspectives that remain outside, underexplored, and essential to thinking critically about technology from below, housed within Columbia University’s INCITE institute. To create knowledge for public action, all expertise and experience must be elevated. As such, INCITE supports and assembles researchers, students, artists, activists, and others from outside the academy to learn from and inspire one another through intellectual and creative encounters. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Develops original design work for specific pieces within each issue of the magazine and helps identify relevant artists to commission where needed. 

  • Plans and develops concepts by designing layouts of visuals and copy that adhere to brand and style guidelines. 

  • Collaborate with editorial and creative teams to generate clear ideas, concepts, and designs of creative assets. 

  • Manage multiple projects within design specifications and ensure deadlines are met.

  • Make recommendations on updating style guidelines where appropriate. 

  • Translate information about Logic(s) into designs that are compelling, accessible, and impactful.

  • Create specialized assets for use on social media, web, and printed materials. 

  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending design workshops and reviewing professional publications.

  • Read current issues of the magazine and engage back catalog to ensure visual identity of the magazine is continuous with the intellectual content being produced. 

Minimum Requirements: 

  • A strong portfolio of impactful design work. 

  • Fluency in Black and Asian diasporic artistic practices and/or the intersection of technology with race across geographic contexts.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor's degree in graphic design and/or related field. 

  • Comprehensive, expert-level knowledge of Adobe Suite and related design software.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in graphic design.

  • Experience working in online or print publishing.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects at once.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain design decisions.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • The ability to receive, interpret, and implement constructive feedback from project stakeholders into your design work.

  • Knowledge of the latest standards, processes, and trends in visual design.

  • Knowledge of Black diasporic visual practices and the Black radical tradition.

  • Ability to translate technical information into accessible images.

Compensation: 

  • Hours: project based, initial project - 20hrs

  • $50-70/hour
